This May, it’s time to celebrate Small Business Month—especially during May 3-9, which is National Small Business Week! In 2024, Georgia had more than 1.3 billion small businesses throughout the state, making up 99.7% of all business based in Georgia. To help Perimeter celebrate its small business community this May, we’ve created a list of can’t-miss businesses to patronize. If you’re thinking of shopping small this month, read on to find our recommendations across the district.

Located along the Ashford Dunwoody Trail in the bustling center of Perimeter, Yaba’s Bagels is owned by New York transplant Lena Abdallah, along with her husband Ahmed Nashif. Abdallah started with her father’s bagel recipes and added familiar Mediterranean flavors like za’atar, halloumi, and dates. Order a plethora of breakfast and lunch options—including the Hotlanta, which pairs bacon, eggs, and cheese with hot honey—on their website

Opened late last year next to Valor Coffee in Dunwoody Village, Prelude Bookstore is an independent, woman-owned bookstore that offers book clubs, story times for kids, and author events. If you’re looking to get started shopping early, don’t miss their Independent Bookstore Day celebration on April 25th, including giveaways for the first 25 customers, a story time with Mayor Lynn Deutsch, and a Prelude Bookstore-themed drink at Valor Coffee.

Sashimi and spring blooms in Sandy Springs

Bishoku is one of the many standout restaurants along Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, owned by second-generation restauranteur Jackie Tashiro. You can get there on the 5 bus, which runs every 20 minutes from Dunwoody Station. From tempura veggies to hand rolls to crispy rice cakes, the comforting Japanese food is is all you’d expect from a local gem. Try the favorite Jackie’s Roll, which features three different kinds of caviar.

A staple of the weekly Sandy Springs Farmer’s Market at City Springs, Mater Day Flower Truck grows most of their flowers and greenery in Sandy Springs, and takes the truck (Mater, from whom the company gets its name) all over Metro Atlanta to sell and deliver flowers. The company sells bouquets, provides floral arrangements for events and weddings, and runs workshops on creating a beautiful flower arrangement. Southern BBQ and soul food in Brookhaven

Southern Fire Kitchen, called the best soul food restaurant in Brookhaven by some regulars, is located in Brookhaven off the well-renowned dining destination Buford Highway. Started by two cousins inspired by the reactions to their home-cooked meals, Southern Fire Kitchen is now a popular spot 20 minutes down the 39 bus line from Lindbergh Center Station.

Another local option has taken a wandering journey through Metro Atlanta, but Fox Bros. BBQ began (and partially continues) in Brookhaven. The eponymous Fox brothers moved from Texas to Brookhaven, Georgia in the early 2000’s and satisfied their Texas barbecue cravings with backyard gatherings with family and friends. The gatherings grew into a catering operation, then a pop-up at Smith’s Olde Bar in 2005, and now several locations including Town Brookhaven, just across the street from the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station.
